During the last 40 years of its proud operation, ERL successfully implemented quite a number of projects, which have contributed greatly to its increased and economic operation with product diversification, better quality control and higher efficiency. The major development projects so far implemented are:
ASPHALTIC BITUMEN PLANT
This plant was built in 1980 at a cost of about TK. 210 million with an installed capacity of 70,000 MT Bitumen including Drum Manufacturing Plant.
LPG SWEETENNING UNIT & LPG SPHERES
LPG Sweetening unit was installed to make LPG totally H2S free and to reduce other forms of sulfur present below a maximum allowable limit. LPG spheres were installed with a view to provide much needed LPG storage facility.
CRUDE OIL, NAPTHA AND OTHER PRODUCTS TANKS
- 2 additional crude oil storage tanks with capacity of 50,000 Cubic Meter each.
- 2 - Naptha storage tanks having 17,500 Cubic Meter capacity each with pumping facilities for export.
- 6 - Nos. other product tanks of total 20,000 cubic meter capcity.
- Repair of 4 nos. old Crude oil storage tanks in 1988 at a cost of TK. 65.18 millions.
3 MEGAWATT POWER STATION WITH WATER TREATMENT PLANT & COOLING TOWER
A steam turbine generation system of 3 MW capacity complete with Water Treatment Unit and Cooling Tower, was built with a view to attain self-reliance in respect of power generation.
DOLPHIN JETTY AT RIVER MOORING (RM) -7
A modern Dolphine Jetty, at a cost of about TK. 140 million was constructed in 1992 at RM 7 for crude oil reception and product export handling.
SECONDARY CONVERSION PROJECT (SCP)
Built at a cost about TK. 2600 million in 1994, the Secondary Conversion project is the largest of all the projects undertaken by ERL. This project produces additional Diesel, LPG and Naptha (all higher value products) out of cheaper priced Furnace Oil. SCP consists of a Vis-breaker, a Mild Hydrocracker and a Hydrogen Unit.
INSTALLATION OF TWO PROCESS BOILERS
One Water Tube Boiler and one Fire Tube Boiler were installed to meet process steam requirements.
2 MEGAWATT CAPACITY DIESEL GENERATOR
The new diesel generator was commissioned in March 1998.
WHITE OIL TANK PROJECT
Under this project, 4 Nos. Storage tanks of 13,000 cubic meter capacity each, with reception and pumping facilities for imported diesel oil, were constructed; commissioned in April 1998.
TRAINING COMPLEX BUILDING
Built at a cost of about TK. 7 million in 1984, it caters to the training need of ERL for skilled and efficient manpower of various professions.
EXPANSION & MODERNIZATION OF QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY
The old quality control laboratory has been modernized and expanded to help maintain standards of product quality.
EXPANSION & MODERNIZATION OF FIRE FIGHTING & SAFETY SYSTEM
Fire water network has been expanded and modern firefighting equipment and vehicles have been added for ensuring better safety.
REPLACEMENT OF OLD CRUDE DISTILLATION TOWER
After 31 years of operation of Refinery, the old corroded Crude Oil Distillation unit was replaced in 1999-2000 at a cost of Tk. 103.52 millions with certain changes in the internals, instrumentation loops, trays, cladding etc. to achieve better Column operational control and improved yields.
ADDITIONAL CRUDE OIL STORAGE TANKS
2 nos. additional crude oil storage tanks with capacity 50,000 M3 each was commissioned in 2000-2001 at a cost of Tk. 347.76 millions.
RCO STORAGE TANK
To keep Vis-breaker plant running un-interrupted with Murban RCO as feed and to recover valuable Gas Oil, one RCO storage tank with 13,000 cubic meter capacity was constructed in December, 1999 at a cost of 33.55 millions.
For processing Visbreaker Naphtha, UOP had conducted a process revamp study to determine the changes to operate the straight-run Gasoline MEROX process unit with Visbreaker Naphtha with the increased capacity of 2250 BPSD. The plant was revamped in 1996 at a cost of Tk. 14.312 millions.
CONDENSATE STORAGE TANK
To facilitate receiving of Condensate from different Gas Fields and also to provide flexibility of Refinery operation through giving opportunity to process Condensate together with Crude Oil at a desired ratio, one Condensate storage tank was contracted with capacity 7,500 M3 in 2001-2002 at a cost of Tk. 36.69 millions.
SECOND 3 MEGAWATT POWER GENERATOR UNIT
To increase the Power generation capacity and meet the present as well as future Power requirements of the Refinery, the 2nd3 MW Steam Turbine Generator was commissioned in July, 2001 at a cost of Tk. 108.18 millions.
CONSTRUCTION OF THREE STORAGE TANKS AT ERL
Three Storage Tanks, 13,000 MT capacity each, have been constructed in year 2015. Two for Furnace Oil and one for Diesel Storage
